A/C Heater smell

Post by Kimlyann » Thu Sep 13, 2012 11:56 pm

My husband bought our mobile home 7 years ago, I've lived in it for the last 5 years. Since I can remember everytime the a/c and heater come on there is a stink kind of like propane. The washroom where the water heater is also stinks constantly. If its not a propane leak what could it be? My husband also said at one point he turned off what he thought was an attic fan, could that have anything to do with it?

If you think you have a gas leak you need to phone your gas supplier ASAP and let them come check your home for leaks. Most gas suppliers will come out the same day.

There are other possibilities. Each sink, tub, shower and toilet in your home is vented. The venting permits enough air into the plumbing to keep water in the trap (that u shaped pipe under the sink). The water in the trap prevents sewer gases from coming back up the drain line and into the home. If one of the vents is not operating right you could be smelling sewer gas.

This is a common problem. There are 2 types of vents. Some vent through a pipe that goes up inside the wall and out the roof. (those little pipe stubs you see sticking through the roof) If one of these can become disconnected in the wall. This is an easy fix but not always easy to get to.

Some builders use auto-vents also called check vents. Most home owners can replace these themselves. The check vent is found inline under the sink and look like this:

You can learn how to replace check vents in this web sites free article section. See What is A Plumbing Check Vent?
