Laminate over Novadeck

Post by tribeal » Thu Aug 02, 2012 12:02 pm

Hi we own a 1997 DW with novadeck sub floor located in north east Houston,Tx. Back in December I installed Laminate floors in the living room area. The floors turned out really nice until about early may 2012. I started to notice a hump in the floor in front of all the AC vents. Well it got worse over the last couple months so I decided to pull all the laminate up on Sunday July 29. Upon pulling the laminate up I discovered wet spots between the sub floor and the bottom of the styrofoam underlayment. Every where there was a wet spot was a hump and in some cases black mold. My theroy is that the air coming from the register was leaking in between the sub floor and the underlayment causing condensation on top of the sub floor. Can anyone out there suggest a remedie? Also should I replace the untire floor or should I just replace the sections that are ruined? Also what would be the best replacement material. I would like to put the laminate back down once I get the sub floor repaired but at the same time I dont want to have to pull it all back up again in a few months. Thanks for any help and suggestions.

Sorry I missed your initial post...

NovaDeck is a space age version of particle board and not well suited for the type flooring you installed over it. What you are seeing is condensation causing water to gather between the foam barrier and the top of the original floor.

I would replace the flooring around each vent with plywood, paint it and then Contact the manufacturer of the new floor system. Ask them for sugestions on how to extend the floor dutcs up to the top of the new floor.

As long as the floor duct stops under the new floor you will have condensation problems.
