Sips as a roofing renovation

Post by rsrobin » Mon Jun 27, 2011 8:49 am

I am thinking of installing a metal roof on a douple wide and wondering if SIPS panels between the existing roof sheathing and the metal roofing would be feasable. They are light and have a great R-value. Seems it would be a good idea.

Structural insulated panels (SIPs) are high performance building panels used in floors, walls, and roofs for residential and light commercial buildings. The panels are typically made by sandwiching a core of rigid foam plastic insulation between two structural skins of oriented strand board (OSB).

SIPs are manufactured under factory controlled conditions and can be custom designed for each home. The result is a building system that is extremely strong, energy efficient and cost effective. Building with SIPs will save you time, money and labor.

Seems like it would be a great idea to BUILD with SIPS but for recovering your roof you don't need the structural components. Adding 2 additional layers of OSB sheeting will put unnecessary additional weight on the roof.... then you will have to put the metal over that.

Most suppliers that provide the metal roof panels also offer single or double bubble insulation that can be used under metal roofing. The foil-backed bubble insulation is a very effective product. It is a layer or two of air bubbles sandwiched between a foil layer and a white poly plastic layer.
Foil wrapped bubble insulation can have an R-value of up to R-15 and blocks 97% of radiant heat energy. The weight of the radiant barrier is negligible and will save utility costs by making your roof system considerably more energy efficient.

The biggest draw back to metal roofing is the noise generated by rain hitting the metal. I love to sleep to the sound of rain hitting the metal roof of my MH, but a lot of folks find it problematic. This blanket type insulation tends to absorb that sound.

Additionally, the insulation blanket comes in rolls. It is rolled out very much like roofing paper. This will keep the cost of the materials and installation much lower then lifting, laying out, and fastening down SIPS that include the bulk and weight of 2 sheets of OSB.
