First time poster/user

Post by jtart51 » Fri Feb 19, 2010 6:28 am

What a cool site! I have owned and lived in many mobile homes since I was a kid. The first was bought at Clayton Homes in 1975. it was called a Kingswood, 12x70 three bedrooms and wohoo..one and a half baths! It was a pretty home. i still have the photo of it. My parents bought a Horton in 1988 with the horrid Masonite siding they bragged about so much. The interior held up well, the outside no at all..even the light gray/silver shingles turned edge up in less than 15 years. The siding rotted away..especially where the skirting met it. I bought my first used home in 1992..a 1984 Parkway with metal siding and YIKES Masonite at the bottom and top, with metal roof. Needless to say it was not good! The home was beautiful though. In 1995 I bought a Fleetwood Vogue 14x70 with island stove and vinyl/shingle. What a horrible experience. The dealer was incompetent and my brand new home was damaged in transit. I now own a 1997 Horton 14x80 2 br 2 ba, vinyl/shingle. OSB wrap, floor, walls, roof, Has separate kitchen/living room. It is well built but has had issues. From the factory the facia was not high enough into the roof, so water leaked into the bathroom over the sink and caused a stain and small peeling of ceiling and ran down the wall beside a window and the wallboard got soft. Got the leak fixed, but the damage remains. Numerous faucet and water line leaks. Still, a solid home and it still looks brand new! I would post pics of it with photobucket, but not sure it is allowed. http://s610.photobucket.com/albums/tt18 ... inglewide/

You are welcome to post photobucket pictures.

I also have lived in manufactured homes for many years. All homes are complex structures. If they are built on or off site.... I have never seen a new home that did not have some problem. Manufactured homes have come a long way since they evolved from over the road campers. The HUD code continues to get more specific and demanding, making for a better and better product.

Factory building significantly controls the home building costs and quality. The great savings in manufactured housing today come from shorter, more organized and more predictable construction schedules. Aside from cost savings, buyers of manufactured homes benefit from the accelerated on-site assembly time. The associated advantages - reduced chance of weather damage or home-site vandalism - make manufactured housing a smart choice

Thank you:) I was trying to see what others thought about my comments on Fleetwood Homes bankruptcy...I liked the manufacturer but not the dealer. How do I locate that one to check?

The Caddy isn't mine...but oh how I wish! You should have seen it in person...long and low and still looks like a spaceship...a future looking car 50 years later...hope the Horton pics looked good too.
