Insulation problem

I had a problem with my roofing shingles being stapled on.The staples were not nailed all the way down and came out the top of the shingles.making them leak.When we went on the roof it had a soft spot in the dwcking. we pulled the shingles back and some kind of very light paper ,And the deck was rotted and black.So we cut it out .When we looked in we saw the insulation was only 1 or 2 inches deep.I have read that the insulation could settle some but I dont think it should settle 4 or 5 inches.I dont tink the 6 inches was ever put in.What do I do.I think the builder should fix this due to the staple problem.And they did not put the amount of insulation in the roof.Making the elictric bill very high. Sounds like it may be covered by the warranty. It is a matter you should take up with your dealer and builder.

If the home is past the warranty period I would expect that you will have difficulties getting any reimbursement. Even if it is not covered, while you are doing the roof repairs consider adding more insulation yourself so you wont have to keep the roof opened or open it again. It is tempting to not do anything if your having a warranty dispute, but this is your home and you must protect your investment and family regardless of "who shudda done what"

Adding insulation is always a great move... it can be done fairly economically and will pay you back every day the local weather is not perfect.

forget the retailer, contact the manufacturer. If the home has a defect, being the improper placement of roof fasteners, the manufacturer should be accountable. Forget warranties as well. The federall building code requires homes to perform and if your home is not performing due to a manufacturing defect, the manufacturer is accountable and there is no time limit for that.

Should the manufacturer say "you are out of warranty" contact your state administrative agency in the back of your consumer manual and file a complaint. If the state you live in does not have a SAA contact HUD at 202-708-6423.
