Kitchen remodel/wall removal

Post by jking » Sat Mar 08, 2008 9:18 am

I have a 1994 Fleetwood Chadwick Model 5563K it is a 26x56 double wide. I want to remove the walls around the pantry and furnace that divides the kitchen from the living room and build a Island to open it up between the kitchen/dining/ living/ back entrance-utility areas. I have plenty of consreuction experience and plan on having supports on either side of the Island so what do I need to anticipate? Jim

You need to know which walls are holding up the roof/ceiling system. Many interior walls in homes are just room dividers and play no part in supporting the roof load. Center line walls between the sections of your doublewide walls and those that support transitions from flat to cathedral ceilings are almost always support walls. You can open support walls as long as you replace the framing with a sufficiently supported header beam. Fleetwood is an active builder with plants across the country.
