Noise is unwanted sound. Sound is a form of energy which is transmitted through the air and is detected by the ear as rapid changes in pressure. The air is set into motion by the source of the sound, which is most often a vibrating surface or a turbulent flow of air. The loudness and character of a sounds frequency and its level can effect different people in vastly different ways.

The quiet enjoyment of our homes is a very important quality of life issue. After all, if we can’t get some peace and quiet at home, where are we going to get it?
One of the most difficult problems to deal with is the question of noise. Noise issues vary greatly, from your neighbor’s late night party, a barking dog, to the noise generated by the new highway and its traffic, to the noise of a rail road, or an airport.

What may be an intolerable noise to one person could be relaxing sound to others. When I was young my parents loved to play loud Big Band music but expressed considerable frustration from my playing blues music at a much lower volume. I now live in a isolated location and enjoy booming my blues but have no tolerance for my sons Rap sounds.

The sounds of our rural location put me to sleep at night. When my big city cousin visits the cricket and frog sounds drive him to distraction and keep him tossing and turning through the night. When I visit him the constant drone of local car traffic outside his window seems to lull him to sleep while it keeps me on edge.

Visit prospective locations for your home at different times of the day and night and judge for yourself if the local sounds are acceptable for you.
