We've just moved into a Polybutylene piped home.
It's a 1990 Redman - not bad construction for the age,
but we have a leak.
How much SHOULD it cost to re-pipe the home? (2 bath
plumbed for ice maker with a dishwasher)
Please just give me a general idea of what I SHOULD
be charged so I have somewhere to start.
The access to the underbelly is not obstructed but of
course the water lines are inside the rodent barrier
(what's left of it)
Thanks,
atheria

Re: Repiping - HELP now please!
I charge about $1500 to repipe using PEX. Some places I'm sure will get 2-3 times that much.

Hi Mark,
Wanna come do mine?
I know you're probably not in
Washington State, but do you know of anyone who might
be?
I'd pay that in a heartbeat since the lowest estimate
I've received today was $4500!
Lemme know!
Thanks!

Re: Repiping Do-It-Yourself ?
If Mark can not come cross country to your home consider re-pluming your home yourself... it is not very difficult and requires no special tools. A set of snipers and the ability to glue fittings is all you will need in addition to the pipe and couplings.
I own some older MH that we rent out. We are replacing the plumbing in them one at a time. It takes us about 2 days for each. You can make this a week-end project.
You can read all about how to make plumbing repairs and even re-plumb your home in Marks Book The Manual for Manufactured Home Repair & Upgrade
The plumbing topic covers include.
1) Plumbing add-ons -- fixture shutoffs, accessible main water shut-off, outside faucet
2) Installing new waterlines
3) Replacing a water heater
4) Replacing a bath tub and faucet
5) Keep your waterline from freezing without a heat tape
6) Choosing and replacing a heat tape
7) Unthawing a frozen waterline or sewer pipe
8) Winterizing your home
Regardless of the age of your home from time to time all homes need some repair. Marks book is invaluable I keep it next to my tool box and have referred to it over and over for those unexpected repairs and for our upgrade and renovation projects. The purchase price represents a small fraction of what you would have to spend on contracting out repairs.

Re: Repiping Do-It-Yourself ?
Due to physical limitations (something you've probably never heard
of...) I can't "DIY".
Gluing is not part of the job that we will be doing - PEX is not glued
from all the research I have been able to do and from the plumbers
and re-piping specialists I've talked to. If all it took was gluing
was involved that would mean more poison in the line anyway... that's
one of the problems of polybutylene piping. The water is barely
potable if it is at all. Looking at my water coming straight out
of the tap you would NOT want to drink it!
Thank you, I will keep looking for someone who can do the job.

Re: Repiping - HELP now please!
HI, I`M MAD AS HECK...WATER LEAK(FLOOD OF WATER) WATER METER READER INFORMED ME I MUST HAVE A LEAK,CALLED PLUMBER #1 NO CAN TOUCH TO REPAIR, CANNOT PATCH POLYB PIPEING,PLUMBING CO. CANNOT GUARANTEE ANY REPAIRS AT $122 A LEAK. HIS SUGGESTION,REPLACE ALL PIPE AT MY EXPENSE,EST. $450 TO $900,JUST TO START THE JOB. PLUMBER#2 CAN REPLACE ALL PIPE $1400. THERE IS A RECALL ON THIS TYPE OF PIPE AND WHY MUST I, AS THE CONSUMER BEAR THE COST OF REPLACEMENT, I DIDN`T EVEN KNOW ABOUT IT? I DON`T HAPPEN TO HAVE $1400 LYING AROUND SOMEWHERE!!! OH AND BESIDES THAT MY FLOOR HAS TO BE REPLACED BECAUSE OF SUCH A WATER FORCE ANDMY MOBILE HOME INSURANCE WON`T PAY BECAUSE IT HAPPENED OVER A PERIOD OF TIME???OH!!!! REALLY NOW. SO WHAT TO DO,WHAT TO DO??/ IS THERE NOT SOME KIND OF CONSUMER PROTECTION CONCERNING THIS? HAD I OF KNOWN ABOUT POLYB PIPE AND WOOD-SIDING, I WOULD NEVER HAVE BOUGHT A FLEETWOOD MOBILE HOME. SO HERE I SIT WET AND DISGUSTED IN A POOL OF TEARS!!!!!!!!
Re: Repiping - HELP now please!
Sorry to hear about your plight..courts have agreed with you about this plumbing and your siding..There were huge class action law suits that addressed both..the product manufacturers were found liable and ordered to replace or repair..The courts felt that consumers should be somewhat aware of the home they live in and put a time limit which was many years to make claims...I think in both cases these time limits have expired..both products have not been used in many years and now it is the homeowners responsibility to maintain and update their homes...Sorry for your problem....You should fix it now..before the problems get much worse...The dampness can very well cause mold problems which are much harder and much costlier to fix...
