Vents in floor/wall????

Post by Kris » Thu Aug 24, 2006 9:20 pm

I don't know if any of you have been asked this but why do manufactured homes come with vents in the floor? I know that with Palm Harbor you have the option of putting vents in the wall. This is somewhat puzzling to me because I have always wondered why the vents are in the floor or on the preimeter (but still on the floor).

I had this question asked to me before but I don't know the reason. I was informed by a handy man that all one would have to do is cut out the wall for the vents and run a "duct" to the vent in the wall. Maybe this is not possible with manufactured homes.

Anyone have any insight..???

Thanks,

Kris

Most homes are built with the ducts in the "
basement" area under the home between the I-beams inside the insulation..Often waterlines are run alongside of the ducts to help resist freezing....This is just the least expensive way to build a home and has been traditional for many years...I work for Palm Harbor...In our area we offer vents in the floor, or on the floor near the walls AND overhead in the ceiling..I have never seen vents in manufactured home in the walls as my boyhood home had....That was a while back...we had a coal furnace as well...

Thanks again Murray!!! I was trying to convince a friend of mine to go for the manufactured homes. This will be our first, I'm excited about it.

Here in Southern California, I don't think we have to worry too much about anything freezing....=)

Anywho, thanks for the insight. I know it differs per company, one company told us it would be $50 per vent to move them and we were told by Palm Harbor that it depended on the roof pitch.

I am telling all I can about "America's Best kept Secret". I think that the manufactured home is great, especially for low to medium income families or single parent families. You definitely get more house for your money!!!

Where is the best location for the vents?

Vent placement is often a mater of economy for builders. But where is the best place for them to be from the home owners point of view? Heat rises and cold air falls. So if you live in the north, where your highest cost is for heating, the best place for your vents would be in the floor. Then the warm air will rise and fill the room naturally. If you live in the sunbelt, where you highest cost is cooling, the best location for your vents would be in the ceiling, so the cold air drops filling the room with out the need for a lot of fan cost to move the cool air where you need it.
