we have a 1990 Artcraft mobile home with a fireplace. When we use it we
get smoke back into the home. we have cleaned the chimney. there is also a
fan that we turn on and it seems to be very weak. Do you have any advice?
Thank You in advance.

It sounds like you have a flue/vent problem. It doesnt seem like its drawing out properly. You probably should have a pro look at it. I would be concerned about carbon minoxide problems. Check around your area for a fireplace repair/installation shop. They may need to get parts from a MH supply store since the vents are unique to MH's if that becomes necessary. Tom

Most likely the chimney is not high enough...The top of the chimney should be higher than the top of the house...If not..you can buy a extension from nearly any fireplace shop..or places like Home Depot..

The blower fan is a low volume fan designed to slowly move air through the firebricks and heat it...

If you have a ceiling fan or your stove vent is running when you start a fire, it will draw the smoke through the house rather than up the chimney. Check for other sources of drawing the smoke, no matter how small. You had the flu checked and it was clear. Go for the obvious first.

The back wall of inside of the fire place is cracked and is loose. Is it possible to repair myself , what materials do I need, or should I get professional assistance?

well, i'm considering installing a fireplace, so i have done some research. as for the blower fan, it is meant to help spread the heat to the room and is weak because if it were strong your wife would hate the draft.

i think it's obvious, however, that you have an air flow problem. sounds like you have a negative air pressure in the room, a vacuum, that's drawing in smoke. have you tried cracking a window?

does the flue open fully? cold air has to be drawn down as well as hot air going up a chimney.

i think the chimney extension might help: on the new homes, the chimney must extend 2 feet over the highest point of the roof, which seems excessive. but the long lenth would increase the draw.

also, the new code requires the air source to be directly in the firebox. meaning there'll be an opening there that admits fresh air. it might be clogged. or it may be actuated by that fan.

Measure the front od yours and try Lowe's and/or Home Depot...Inserts like yours are common....The finish items aropund the fire box is extra and sold separately....
