drafty hood vent

Post by Eric » Fri Sep 09, 2005 9:00 am

I have an installed microwave oven above my stove that also serves as the vent/fan. I have noticed in past winter that there was a large amount of cold air and draft coming in from the vent(on the underside of microwave).
Up on the roof this summer I dont find a vent pipe where I think there should be one for the oven/microwave vent! The house does have a ridge vent though.
Any ideas where this is "venting" to ? and how do I cut down on the cold air/drsft coming in this winter?

Most likely the micro wave exhausts through the side wall. It is likely that the louver door on the exhaust hood is stuck open. However, it could exhaust though the roof.
Regardless, the HUD code requires that these micro waves and range hoods exhaust to the out side of the home.

Eugene,
This has to vent thru the roof as its a triple section home and this is in the center section, I'm sure there are no side-wall vents!
Thanks

It's common to vent this to just under a roof vent. I'll bet you have a stuck louver also. Perhaps a long coathanger or something similar, pushed up the vent from inside, would unstick it.

Thank you
I will certainly give that a try!

If the hood is in the center section of a triple wide, I doubt that the duct runs to the eaves. It almost has to be a roof vent.
It sounds like it is not hooked up at all!
write the manufacturer and tel them.

Back to this problem!
I was just reminded about this vent problem as I walked past my stove and felt a chilly balst of cold air!
There is a "spice" cabinet above the microwave that has a boxed in area where I assume the vent runs up to the ceiling.
Is there some way to get into this part of the vent stack and put some sort of a flapper in to prevent the cold air back flow?
I realize the most correct answer is to have the vent come out of the roof, but its almost winter and dont really want to tear into that now.
I am awaiting a manufacturer reply but have no expectations of them helping any.
Any more suggestions would be helpfull
I just can't cover up the stove vents...my wife seems to cook with an attitude of anger and we often need to turn on the vent fan! :)

FYI
Finally had my drafty oven/;microwave vent looked at by the Mfg.(my delay not theirs)
Come to find out, the vent went up into the "attic" space and was just laying on the insulation facing towards the vented soffit!
Thus the cold draft- especially on windy days.
The Mfg. sent a man to repair this and the problem was resolved to my total satisfaction
