Duct Board ???? Question

Post by jason » Wed Jun 29, 2005 5:21 pm

I recently had a new 2 1/2 ton unit with matching coil installed. The unit works but it doesn't work as well as i would like. The airflow through my registers is very cold and powerful. Some rooms are cold (because they are small but my large room (kitchen, dining room, and living room combined) doesn't get very cold. My question pertains to my ductwork.I have a single wide so my registers are in one line throughout the home. What i want to do is put a crossover to the other side of my one large room. The problem is that my ductwork isn't metal. It is insulation wrapped in a square box covered with what looks like aluminum foil(duct board)?????Very strange. If it was metal this would not be a problem but i don't know where to start with this type of ductwork.Maybe there is some kind of kit that is sold somewhere??????I'm very handy and i would like to attempt this myself. It's not brain surgery but i don't want to ruin my ductwork.Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That sounds exactly like the stuff we use in RV manufacturing. If so it is very easy to work with. A stanley knife and spare blades, tape measure and a straight edge is all you should need. The material is almost identical to the aluminum foil covered styrofoam used under vinyl siding. It can be cut and bent in straight lines using a straight edge. When we made our own ducts in the factory we would bend it by placing the 6 or 8 inches we needed under a board and simply lift up on the foil board once you have your seams fold your box together and tape. Don't use the gray duct tape, it falls apart over time. Instead use the aluminum foil duct tape, Lowes and Home Depot carry it I'm pretty sure. You can splice into the existing duct easily by cutting an opening the size of the duct your installing and simply tape the new duct in. Be sure to tape it all around so you seal it properly. I hope this helps.
