replace ceiling tiles with sheetrock?

Post by Kcalbs » Tue Mar 29, 2005 4:11 pm

Is it possible to replace the ceiling tiles on an older manufactured home with sheet rock? Anyone out there with pictures of what it looks like up under the ceiling tiles?

If you have a 20# roof load (in Texas you probably do) I wouldn't.
The sheetrock is much heavier than the ceiling tile and will reduce the ability of your roof to carry loads. Homes built with sheetrock ceilings have stronger trusses than those built with tile ceilings.
Also the tile allows for some flexing where the sheetrock does not. If you have to get up on the roof for any reason, you would probably crack the sheetrock by walking on ithe roof.
If you have a higher roof load, you would probably be ok.
