what to do about strips on walls

Post by Lewis Coyle » Mon Feb 28, 2005 11:31 pm

I was wondering if anybody had ANY ideas about how to get rid of wall strips without totally redoing my drywall? My walls have a texture to them and me and my wife would like to repaint the room. But before we do we would like to remove the strips if we can. We are afraid that the wall seams will crack if we just mudded them and the texture would be ruined. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Tape and mud them, and sand them like you would normal drywall for the best results If you just mud or caulk them it will crack eventually and generally not look to good.

Thanks Bill for your suggestion, but my walls have a texture to them and if I taped and mudded them there would be a smooth strip on the wall. Any other suggestions? Could I mud the whole wall?

We just finished having our strips removed. We had a professional crack filler come in and tape and fill where the strips were. He finished the sanding today. We plan to use a oil based primer and then paint. We have the vinyl paper on our walls and they are slightly textured. I will know in a week or so how it works out. We have friends who did the same thing four years ago and their walls look beautiful.

We just got done fixing that problem in my daughter's room. We removed the strips, then filled in the gaps and sanded. After that we hung paintable wallpaper that has kind of a stucco design and painted. It looks great! I am planning on fixing all of my walls that are not drywalled in this way.
