I live with my elderly father in a singlewide approx. 15 years old. We have a coating on the roof which my younger applied several years back. My question is how often should roof coating be applied and how much weight can the roof support. I am a big boy - close to 300 lbs. and the roof seems to "give" the few times I have ventured on it. I don't want to come crashing in thru the roof.
Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

Re: I don't want to go thru roof...
Most coatings should be applied every 2-3 years. Although its probably too late for you, many people coat their homes wrong. First, I would not coat a metal roof unless it begins to leak or it shows signs of rusting. When the time comes to coat, first you want to apply neoprene to all the seams, around the vents and along the edge of the home. This is what truly seals your home from leaks. A roof coating is just that -- a coating. It's main purpose is to reflect the sun and maybe seal-up any pin-hole leaks.
As for the weight, you can distribute your weight by laying down some sheets of plywood. But of course you have the added danger of the plywood slipping or moving.

You gotta see my repair manual!

My father uses a long stick and a paint roller to apply the paint on our Mobile Home roof. He stays on the ground avoiding huring himself or the roof and then easily applies the paint. I dunno, but this might work for you

The method suggested by Grant is the one suggested by many manufacturers.
A good step ladder will allow you to get closer to your work.

The problem with that way is you never see any trouble spots nor do you recoat the seams and vents which is the proper steps to take when recoating. If you dont, they could come back and bite you. Tom

When I said long stick, I should clairfy what I meant....Try a 10' to 20' that is about 1-2" in diameter pvc pipe that you get at Lowes or Home Depot and that will give some flexibility and help with the contour of the roof.

Safety must be the paramount concern, especially with an inexperienced homeowner.
