Strips on Sheetrock

Post by Lisa Lawrence » Sun Dec 19, 2004 9:16 am

My mom has a newer doublewide......through most of the home instead of mudding and taping the sheetrock they put strips where the sheets come together. What is the easiest way to remove and fix this, so that she will be able to paper or paint these walls?

Hi, first just making sure you have your terminology correct so were sure we are talking the same language. Most MH's do not have what is usually called sheetrock. Thats usually a term used in stick built homes and are actual gypsum quarter inch or larger sheetrock. What MH's have is call wallboard. Vinyl covering with a cardboard sandwich in between. However, some manufacturers do offer real sheetrock as an option.

The strips just pull off, but you will probably run into many staples that will have to be removed. The gaps can be filled with sheetrock mud of paintable silicone caulk. Care has to be taken to insure a smooth finish that will not show.

Since this wallboard it vinyl covered, you must clean and prime prior to painting or putting up wallpaper. Thats to insure a good finish for the paint to grab onto. If you do not do these steps, the paint will flake off in short order. Tom

I live in a double wide and am painting my walls this week. I was seriously considering taking the strips off and using the plaster stuff to fill in the gaps. how hard of a project is this? and is it necessary to prime before I paint? what do I need to clean the walls with?
