We have an older home with a (leaky cracked) metal roof & would like to build onto our existing addition to the full length. And then cover with a pitched roof.
The code states the roff has to be a min. of 3/12. Is there an advantage to building with a steeper pitch?
Any suggestions would be appreciated!
Thanks,
David
New Roof
Re: New Roof
The only way you could do what you are asking and have it be structurally sound would be to build a new home around the old.Your present home is not built to hold the loads of a standard roof and your sidewalls could not be expected to hold a heavy roof or addition.I've seen pitched standard roofs built over metal roofs but they are not supported by the home. They have their own posts to hold their load .To do what you want correctly it would be cheaper to just build a new home.
Re: New Roof
In California we call the new roof structure a "ramada" and it is free standing. Most areas allow this if built to code. Remember that to get the old house out some time in the future you will need clearance.
