Removal of Marriage wall
Removal of Marriage wall
The wall between my living room and hall is the marriage walls between the two sections of the mobile home. I want to remove the marriage wall between the living room and hall. The model home did not have this wall, but I had it added when the double wide was built. Big mistake! If I remove the walls, about 14 feet, will I need a header to reinforce the roof. That will be the only portion of the wall besides a doorway that is open in the 72' length of the home.
Re: Removal of Marriage wall
Was it put in at the factory or after it was set up on your lot? Tom

This gets tricky, without seeing it and knowing exactely where it is, it would be very tough to give advice. My advice is to either contact the manufacturer, which I doubt will help or a local MH guy who may be able to give advice or refer you to someone who may be able to help. When dealing with marriage lines you must be absolutely sure what your attempting wont get you in serious trouble, just to be safe in other words. Tom
Re: Removal of Marriage wall
Tom is right,
You would need to put in a header, reinforce the floor where the header supports rest and install piers under those supports.
Plus, if you have wiring or plumbing in those walls, it would get harder.

Re: Removal of Marriage wall
More then likely you had the wall added to the original build plan of the home. This means that it is likely a cosmetic wall.In other words non load bearing. Most MF homes use a wood jack system instead of headers over windows, doors other and wide openings. To be sure you will have to open up the wall above the ceiling and see whats up there. If theres a wood jack system up there or a header you can tear out the wall ,if not you will not to install a header. The wall is on the marriage line so you liklely have the support you need all ready under the home for the new header. You probably won't need it though.Get someone to check it out for you.
Re: Removal of Marriage wall
Thanks for the help. You are right, this portion of the marriage wall was not in the original plans. I found someone that will check it out. If it doesn't require a header, I can do the work myself, but I don't want to tackle it otherwise.

Thanks for the help from everyone. You are right, this portion of the marriage wall was not in the original plans or the model I looked at. I don't remember what the ceiling system looked like. I will have a MH guy check it out. If it doesn't require a header, I can do the work myself, but I don't want to tackle it otherwise. Again, thanks for all the help.
