Vinyl Siding

Post by Lois » Fri Jun 04, 2004 4:41 am

Hi,
Do you have any suggestions on repairing gaps between pieces of siding that doesn't properly meet (approx. 1/2"-1") ?? I purchased the mobile home, and they fixed it with "silver tape" that looks terrible. I noticed it seemed to be used to cover holes, and cracked pieces also. When I went to look at it, the tape is so old that it too needs to be replaced because it isn't protecting the gaps, holes or cracks due to dry-rot/age of the tape. Is there any other fix, to match the color (light gray) properly for vinyl siding when it seems to have either been installed incorrectly to have occasional gaps between the pieces or to cover the holes/cracks in the pieces themselves without having to resort to the "silver tape" that had been used previously??

Hi, not really. I dont know of a fix other than replacing the panels. Your in sort of a dillema because you probably wont find matching colors, so your probably going to end up replacing everything or live with different colors. Its not a good idea to let this go on too much longer, your doing damage behind the siding most likely, Tom

Siding on a home is to be installed so it can move freely back and forth to avoid it from buckling. If you can slide your siding around a bit to make the gaps disappear, you can secure it on the with a screw on the nailing tab to keep it from sliding apart again.
If the siding was installed properly, sliding the panels back and forth a bit from edge of home to edge of home should give you enough overlap to correct your problem. If the siding is still short, replacing panels that are close in color or residing the entire home is about your only option.

Good Luck

We have resided two modular homes now with great results. It wasn't that expensive to do ourselves. The siding for a 16x80 was about 400 and the cost for the trim for it was close to the same. We also house wrapped and lowered heating and cooling bills significantly in the process.

The end result on the second one is a home we purchased in a traditional neighborhood with land that went from being called "the mobile" to the "cottage".
