Comodore Roof Trusses

Post by Tim » Sat Jan 31, 2004 9:03 pm

I recently purchased a 1998 Comodore 56' x 14' home with a peak roof system ( cathedral ceilings throughout). I was told by Comodore's Mr. Dan Stace that this Comodore home uses "S" type roof trusses and that the space between the drywall ceiling and the roof sheeting is approx. 3 " ( I'm trying to figure out how to install ceilng fans in some of the rooms and have learned that the plastic electrical boxs that hold the ceiling light fixture will not provide adequate support for a fan system).

I purchased a fan brace form Home Depot that has 2 1/2 inch high leveling "feet" on the expandable brace. So, there's sufficient space between the drywall and roof sheeting for the leveling "feet" part of the brace but I'm not sure how the sharp points on each end of the feet will interface with these "S" type trusses. I thought Mr. Stace mentioned that 2x3's were used in the roof instead of 2x4's.

Does anyone know what the "S" type truss means and if I the fan brace I purchased can be installed with this type of construction. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks.

Tim,
Couple of ways to tackle the problem.
1) Making sure with the hole you have open to use a flashlight and mirror, make sure you have no expandable foam setting on top of the sheetrock that the factory would use to secure the rafter to the sheetrock. With this out of the way, you ensure the fan brace legs rest where intended...
I have added many fan boxes the way your attempting and no problems to date.

2) The other way is a bit more work but if your willing to spend the time and have the tools/know how, you can remove the shingles, cut a hole in the decking and secure the fan brace that way. If you have a metal roof, simply cover hole with a metal roof vent.

Hope this helps,
Good Luck!

also if this is a double-wide you can go in from the gable end by removing the vinyl and cutting an access or removing a peice of osb etc,....but if this is a single with a metal roof ..you can cut a nice piece of plywood 24x24 and stain it , attach it to the ceiling (makeing sure the screws run into the trusses).use at least 6 screws..cut a hole where the wires come through attach the fan mount and then the fan....you can use moulding around the raw edges of the plywood to make it nice job...
