bathroom floor replacement???

Post by Rose » Thu Jan 22, 2004 4:51 pm

Hi,

I purchased a used mobile home 10 months ago. The previous owner had replaced the carpet in the living room, hall and bath. I have a 3 year old that got carried away in the bathtub one night last week and soaked the carpet. I decided it was time to pull up the carpet and replace it with something more "user friendly." When I pulled up the carpet and padding, I found the floor (plywood) still wet and there was black mold all along the floor next to the tub and around the toilet (about 8 -10 inches width). I have had a fan on the floor for a couple of days. It is dry, but now I am unsure what to do next. I am a single mom and can handle small tasks such as installing floor tiles, etc. But I am wondering about my next step with this mold. The floor does not appear to be deteriorating. But it is obvious that it has gotten wet before this incident. Any suggestions? Should I contact my insurance agent? (p.s. I can't afford to hire out a handy man or contractor for this).

If this is true plywood and not the standard particle board, then it should hold up okay. If its particle board, sooner or later it will probably deteriorate and get soft to the point it will have to be taken out.

I would definately use some type of cleaner to get rid of the mold and then make absolutely sure its completely dry before recovering. Tom

Thanks Tom. It is true plywood flooring.... definitely not the particle board stuff. The mold has been removed with a cleaner. I've checked and double checked and the floor appears to have no type of decay (other than the mold). However I have no idea what is under the tub. Should I lay a 1/4 inch subfloor as a precautionary measure? I think I can do this successfully and only the toilet will have to be removed for this project. (Once again trying to avoid having to take out the tub) If none of the above is necessary, I have vinyl tiles and am ready to put them down!
