Musty Smell in Older Trailer

I am in the process of maybe buying a 1973 Checkmate which is located at Myrtle Beach SC. . Only 1.5 miles from the ocean. Why I say this is, even though the home looks nice, was well kept up and was only used as a vacation home, it has a strong musty smell to it. Is this mold, mildew? I was told this smell was common for the area. But I don't want to expose my dogs or myself to mold, How can I find out what and why the musty smell is there? And also will I be able to remove the smell and how or where to locate any information on this matter?

Hi, homes that are closed up for long periods of time do acquire that smell. Does not necessarily mean its mold, but its a possibility. If nothing is visable to the naked eye, then your only solution would be to take off a few wall panels to see whats behind the walls would give you some clue. Obviously that cant be done prior to the sale. Getting the owner to agree to an inspection would be the only sure way I know put your mind at ease. Tom

You might ask to pull back the carpet in rooms and inspect the backing, pad and floor. Pay special attention to areas under windows and next to exterior doors. Look at any base trim for signs of black spotts. Inspect the underside of the home by pressing against the black vapor barrier to see if you have any pockets of water.
