Walls

Can the walls of a mobile home be taken down to make two small bedrooms into one large room ?? What are they made of ?? Is it wood, or metal ?? I am in the process of purchasing my first mobile home, and I would like to find out if it can be modified in ways to convert rooms. Is there such a thing as blue-prints available?? I would like to know how it (1987 Poloron) is constructed. Do you know how I would do this??

Lois, if its a single wide all interior walls, can be removed except for a wall that transitions to a higher ceiling. A double wide is a bit trickier, of course you cannot remove the marriage wall, its best to ask and give the location before removing on a double wide. There are no blue prints readily available. Manufacturers do not release that info very easily. The walls are normal wood construction. Tom

Tom,
Thank you very much for your informative response. It is a single wide, and I am very happy to hear I can convert the two small rooms !!! Thank you so much, I appreciate your help.

Lois,

Keep in mind tha the cross walls that you move are secured to the ceiling and the floor. You may also have electical wiring to deal with here as well, but nothing that cant be overcome.Also you will have to think about the floor and ceiling repairs from removing walls as well. Simple enough to path ceilings, but keep in mind that even a new home you will see a color difference in the ceiling paint match. You may have to end up painting the entire room ceiling to match. The floor will also have holes left from screws.

Good Luck.

Thank You Tracy for thinking of the details, too. I will be getting my home inspected Tuesday 9:00 am. Are there any particular questions I should consider asking the inspector while he is there ?? I am having the physical/mechanical, and pest inspection done. I am not that concerned with septic (park responsibility) as part of inspection, but wondering if there are specific questions I should be asking ?? Any information would be welcomed.

Most of the time inspectors look at the safety aspect above all else. Electrical smoke detectors, making sure your furnace works and hot/cold water works and is plumbed correctly to faucets.
Depending on previous alterations to the home, your inspector may or may not find other items.
~~~CONGRADULATIONS~~~~~~ On your new home!
Thank you Tracy, if all this goes through, I am sure I may be back to ask more questions on things as I am a novice with manufactured homes. This is a fantastic opportunity to have questions answered, and learn from other's questions on home improvements or similiar situations that may need to be done. Thank you again, and thank you for having this forum, I think it is wonderful !!!
