My wife and will be PCS'ing with the Military to North Carolina in about six months. This will be her final duty station before we finally say hello to civilian life again. We are planning on moving to Kentucky after that. We already have five acres of land in KY and want to purchase a new home to place on it. We were thinking about maybe buying a place while in NC and putting it on a rented lot while we are there (about 3-4 years), and then having it moved to our land in KY (about 600 miles away). The home will probably be somewhere in the 24 x 60ish size, 1500-2000 square feet. The Military will pay a big chunck of the moving cost in place of shipping our household goods. I'm trying to figure out two things, any help would be most apreciated.
#1: A rough idea of the cost of the take down/shipping/set up involved in moving, to get an idea of how much out of pocket we would need to come up with.
#2: How wise is it to move a home over this kind of distance? I know that the homes made today are much nicer and better built than they were 20 years ago, however are they sturdy enough to make this kind of trip?
We are just tired of the Post Housing and local rental living that's been military life since joining and would really like to be in our own place for the last few years. This way we can start personalizing it and making it home before we actually settle in KY. It would also be nice for our daughter and the new one on the way so that they don't have such an adjustment in a few years. Plus, there are a lot more choices available in NC as far as different models and features offered, so we'd really like to pick from the ones available there than the ones in KY. Once again, any info or idea's would be very apreciated.. Thanks.
Moving a double wide...
Re: Moving a double wide...
We purchased a home out of state, somewhat like your situation, and found that it was going to be 10-12 thousand dollars to move it, not including set up.. If you are to be in NC for a short period, maybe a repo unit is the best way, and the sell it afterwards... Moving them are a pain.. We finally ended up selling our home, and buying another one here in Tennessee

Brad,
I just retired from the AF several years ago and got into the mobile home park rebuilding business. I've moved and setup about 50 homes so far so I feel somewhat qualified to answer this question. There are many factors to consider so I'll just list them.
Money. Depends on area as to how much. In Florida, it costs me about $6000 to $7000 to have a mover "bag and tag" a mobile home of your size. That means to take everything off it which can't be put back on (carports, decks, Florida Rooms, etc) take it apart, transport it hundreds of miles, spot it on its new location then reinstall it. We're talking 2 days work and some serious labor. Then you have to get all the permits to reinstall it and another week or so of putting it back together, repairing the damage, hooking up plumbing, A/C units and ducting, electrical hookups, getting it inspected then pouring driveways (if required) and reinstalling the skirting. Now after spending the $6k to $7k to have all this fun, it will take you a month to get everything back to normal while you're paying lot rent. I know the lot rent isn't expensive in NC but it's still a pain.
Then, you have all that to look forward to again in a few years. If it costs more, you are looking at $10k-$12k each way like Jennifer said above. That could be a total of $24,000 to do all this.
My advice to to sell the home, move to NC and buy or rent another home for 3 years then buy a home and have it installed on your land in KY and be ready for you to move into when your wife gets out.
