The certification number is the number on the red label(s) attached to the exterior of the home. These label numbers are also referred to as the HUD label number and are listed on the data plate inside the home.
The certification label numbers will always start with a 3 letter prefix, that designated the agency that inspected the plant. RE: RAD, PFS, HWC, NTA, TRA, ULI, or a state GEO, FLA, etc.
The serial number is stamped on the front crossmember on each chassis section. this number is given by the manufacturer. This is the main number to use when talking to the manufacturer or dealer.
The VIN number is issued by the DOT, you shouldn't need that. it is on the title of the home.

Missing title and no serial number

We're in trouble! Several years ago we bought what we thought was a modular home. Since we sold our old home first, we paid "cash" for the home. Now that we want to sell it we find out that it's a manufactured home. We have no title. There is no identification number anywhere...we checked the chassis, the water heater closet, the heater-a/c closet, every closet in the house, and find absolutely nothing. The title company is asking us for a title, which, of course we never had. This is an old manufactured home...1974, we believe. It is a lakefront home, and is on concrete piers NOT on a foundation. If we could only find something to start a title search. Does anyone have any ideas???

M/H's were not governed much in 1974, no hud tags back then, probably had licence plate & renew yearly like automobiles, Ck your local Court House, Probably "grand fathered in" since. Try the old "cabin on the river" thing.. if they dont like that, invite them out to inspect it.. Then try to deed it to the land if they cant positively ID it.
