HAD ENOUGH OF MOBILE HOMES AND PARKS

Post by Kay Brown » Tue Dec 16, 2003 12:07 pm

I would never recommend moving into a mobile home or a mobile home park to ANYONE! I've lived in a new mobile home at Timberline Estates in Coopersville, Michigan for for about 5 months, only to put up with noisy traffic, especially BOOM cars passing by my home constantly, and then I moved to Algoma Estates in Rockford, Michigan (ever increasing lot rents) and have lived here since February this year, and have had to put up with drug dealers across the street who are thundering in and out of their driveway about 20-30 times a day / night / morning with their loud exhaust system and BOOM bass stereo. The loud exhaust system is an after-market exhaust system usually called "Dynaflow" or "Flowmaster" and are installed to be as noisy as possible.

Despite pleas to management to do something about these rude and horrible neighbors from Hell, the manager just rolls his eyes and does nothing but collect lot rent. No one else in the neighborhood is willing to stand up against these thugs, so I'm treated like I'm too sensitive to all noises. NOOOO....actually...lawnmowers, screaming kids, and barking dogs don't really bother me, just the BOOM / VROOM cars. I'm beginning to think all mobile home parks are the same, and all managers are the same. I'm moving out of here next year, I've had enough of mobile homes and parks! It doesn't matter how expensive the lot rent is, or how nice the lawns and homes in the front of the parks are, the parks all have white trash and drug dealers!

While I can understand your frustration, have you thought about the fact that the problems you are experiencing happen everywhere, not just in mobile home parks? Subdivisions and housing developments have problems with loud music, speeding cars, drug traffic, etc. This type of activity is not confined to just mobile home parks. Maybe your neighbors and yourself can try to organize a neighborhood watch, or work with local police to help in resolving the situation.

Yes, in my manufactured home, it is absolutely quiet at night. Of course, it does rain 180 days a year, but it's quiet :)

You are absolutely right, Kay. The parks attract all sorts of unsavory charactors. I'm trying to sell my mfr home so I can move out. Neighborhoods of houses take better care of their houses in general and care more. The police also take them more seriously than in mfr home parks (where they ignore the problems). I think I have dealers on my road (cars coming, staying for a couple minutes then leaving) and garbage being tossed around, and loud cars and music, and the mgr just ignores all this and changes rules around when enforcing them might mean he would have to do some work. Just ignore the people who say they haven't seen any problems - they are the ones who live next to you and say you are just "oversensistive" and "overreacting".

To: "Lake", who replied to my post and completely understands what I'm going through...THANK YOU so much :-) I'm glad SOMEONE understands and sees what's really going on. We just had a neighborhood watch formed in late October, and it's a huge joke. I attended the first meeting, and it was mostly about 10 elderly neighbors, the manager, his assistant (they had to make an appearance for "PR" purposes) and a local Sheriff's Deputy. I complained about the BOOM / VROOM cars and the drug dealing neighbor across the street, and the manager and his assistant just rolled their eyes at me, and the Deputy just gave me a "blank" look. Then I mentioned I had seen the online sexual offender registry and found out we had 2 registered sex offenders in the park, and the manager dropped his head in his hands out of embarrassment and said "There goes my job!" Most complaints from the neighbors attending the meeting were mostly noise-related, but the manager only takes it seriously if more than one person is complaining about the same "problem neighbor". But, nonetheless, the first mobile home park I lived in from 1994-2000 was fairly small, well maintained, and most residents were elderly. But the biggest difference was the fact that there was a LIVE-IN manager right in the park. She lived there, cared about the residents and the park, and she wasn't afraid to address problems right on the spot! Unfortunately, there are not many mobile home parks left with resident managers, most are corporate owned and care only about getting their lot rent money every month. But, after this last experience, I've made a very expensive mistake by putting a large down payment on this mobile home back in February, only to be forced to move out in the coming months.

I understand your frustration w/ the park. It is not uncommon to have the sorts of problems you describe in any neighborhood where people are renting. You are right that ppl often don't take it seriously enough when renters have trouble. I have a question though about your dissatifaction w/ MH in general. You never mention any problem with the homes, just the places they were set. If you did have issues with the home would you mind saying what they were and what the brand and year were. Thanks

Dear Kay,
It saddened me to read about your awful experiece living in your current mobil home park. I live in a 55+ park in Massachusetts. I must say that it is simply beautiful, next to the forest, gorgeous pine and other trees, and the peaceful atmosphere is one you would not believe. If ever you want to move to a great place give me a call. I work two days a week selling the homes. I live in the same park where I work.
