Well costs?

Hi,
I live in northern California and have no idea how much a well would/should cost.
Can anyone help me with this?
Oh, on an ajacent property, there is a old well? housing that, in August with 100degree heat, had water coming out of it. This housing is about an eight inch pipe and it is less than a hundered feet from property. I am told that there was an old mill on the location during the 1950's and the well was used for the mill
