Warranty

Post by Lynne » Thu Sep 01, 2005 7:37 pm

I read on one of these forums the comment that one year warranties are a sign of a lower quality home.

So, which manufacturers offer a better warranty? I was really hoping to get a 10 year warranty, but I guess that will never happen.

I see that Fleetwood and Clayton only offer one year warranties. I can't find any info on Champion's warranty on their website. Palm Harbor offers a "Five year protection plan" but that doesn't sound the same as a warranty.

I am hoping to buy a home in Tennessee, and there don't seem to be very many brands to choose from that I can find.

Any replies will be appreciated.

Good you are doing your research...Champion brand homes come from many different factories..They have different warranties in each plant..see the individual plant web sites..such are Home of Merit...Gate way..Redman..

Palm Harbors "Protection Plan"acts much like you picture a warranty..The name comes from the fact that the Federal Government has a specific definition of the word warranty..Which forbids fees on warranties..Palm Harbor does has a $50 deductible on years -5..Thus the name "Protection PLan"...The specifics of the plan are listed on their web site...All Palm Harbor dealers also offer a "protection plan"on the appliancies...as well..They also offer a 2/10 warranty From the company by that name...

Fleetwood did also offer the 5 year protection plan...But gave it up when they figured out they do not build a strong enough house to afford to give this coverage..Dlayton like Champion builds home under many names..Some of them probably offer the 5 yr protection plan....Such as Schult...Marlett...Maybe even Norris.....

Thank you so much for your reply! I am probably going to buy one of the books that promise to rank builders and see what else I can find, as well as trying to get more info on the specific brands you mentioned. I don't want to get into a junk house that isn't going to hold up.

Lynne, an alternative solution would be to check into purchasing an additional warranty through an unaffiliated agency. You can purchase a 3-year, 5-year or 10- year warranty on the structure of the house. A 5-year warranty costs around $600 but one would have to actual read what it does cover. I'm considering it myself but haven't yet investigated it or if it is worth it or if any of the companies are reputable.
