Comparison Shopping

Post by dlcurry » Sat Dec 11, 2004 2:15 pm

I live in the North East and considering buying a Skyline (built in Sugar Creek OH.) or Patriot Home ( built by Crystal Valley). Construction wise which one is built the best. Im talking about door jambs being hard wood or pressed wood, everything being on 16" centers, and so on. I plan on purchasing this house in the next month or so. Thanks for your help.

Check out the library on this site. I own a Skyline, built here in VT. Outstanding customer service, impeccable home. Is it the best built you ask? probably not, is it a piece of crap, absolutely not. I researched for 3 months, and for what I was looking for, it fit the bill, although I didn't realize until after owning the home how strong and organized their customer service was. The Vermont plant is definitely a model of efficiency and spectacular customer service, other manufactures should look at. From what I hear on this site, the manufacturing facilities can differ from state to state. Feel free to e-mail me if you have any further questions. Keep exploring this site, you'll hear from many knowledgeable and wise people. Although I own my home on my own land, I am actually considering purchasing some other old metal on metals that are on their own land in the area and doing some site improvements, again using Skyline as the builder of choice.
Good luck Bob

Sounds like a no lose situation to me.
Crystal Valley is a little more solidly built, but Skyline has impeccable service after the sale.
It would be an extra cost option on either of these homes to get 16" o.c. roof trusses.
Neither uses hardwood jambs. The Crystal valley would have more real wood trim and less wrapped mdf trim.
If one has a floorplan you prefer or a price advantage, I think you can prefer choosing that one.
Ask your retailer for a copy of the installation manual for the home you choose before it is built and read it through. I wouild strongly suggest that you buy the George Porter installation videos offered here. It is a lot to watch and you will get bored, but this way you will know what to look for when your home is installed and what questions to ask. And once you know what to ask for in terms of your foundation and installation you will get a home that you will be proud of and happy with for years to come. And the videos offer an excellent tutorial for your upcoming walk through.
Good luck

I was told by two different Patriot dealers that the door jambs are real hardwood.
