Looking to buy land and have a manufactured home built in San Diego area of California. Any help would be much appreciated.

Check out Ideal Homes at Third and Main in El Cajon. They carry Silvercrest (very nice and very well made) and Hallmark (don't know much about them). Note that all new homes have to have sprinkler systems in San Diego County so be prepared for about a $3500 dollar non-option. Form what we have seen the prices in California are about 20,000 to 25,000 more for the same home compared to dealer prices in the Phoenix area. Factory tours, I would take a tour of the Silvercrest and Golden West factories if you have the time. Silvercrest is built in Corona and Golden West is in Perris so you can probably see both in the same day. I think you can take tours of the Schult and Cavco factories in the Phoenix area if you wish to drive over there. The folks at Ideal were quite nice and seemed professional to us when we visited, but we are moving to New Mexico and just trying to insure that we actually tour as many different brands and floorplans as possible before we buy from a local guy in NM. Maybe someone else has experience with actually going through the whole process with a San Diego area dealer and can tell you more about who is good and who is not so good to deal with.

Depending on where in SD County you live, Ideal is good and I think so is Advantage in San Marcos. To my knowledge, not all homes have to have sprinkler systems in San Diego. In fact, while I think there maybe areas that require it, I live in N. County and have never seen a home in this area with sprinklers. I'd shy away from Pacific Manufactured homes. We worked with Advantage because we wanted a land owned MH park. We got one (actually in the last year we've had 3 but the first one had a new Fleetwood on it that was new but not as nice as I require, the 2nd had a deed restriction on the lot). We're really excited to be moving in about a month or so into our W60 Silvercrest in a resident owned park in San Marcos. Hope this helps!

Ellen, why would you shy away from Pacific in San Marcos? We have been talking to them, and would like to know about your experience with them.
