hi
i thought all mfg homes had osb or some sort of plywood or something under the vinyl exterior or the hardipanel (plank, etc.). but i found out that some of the palm harbors have studs and then the hardipanel stuff is just nailed to the studs...nothing else in between, except the insulation i think.
does that sound right to you guys?
thanks.
a little confused...
a little confused...
If you have vinyl siding they wrap the house with plywood or osb. If you get Hardipanel than that forms the wrap so yes you would have studs than hardipanel.
Re: a little confused...
OSB (I know of no homes with plywood wrap) is a quality feature that some feel add a lot to the home...All home have some sort of wrap..(hariboard itself would qualify)..many have foam board..some have asphalt inpregnated boards as a wrap..In these cases OSB wrap would be an upgrade option..

i will believe it b/c you guys say so. i did not think hardiboard would classify as a wrap...
palm harbor uses smartpanel. i thought that was the least expensive and less reliable product. i thought hardiplank or hardipanel was better.
thank you.

Smart Panel is made by Louisiana-Pacific and is similar to Hardipanel but carries a 30 year warranty where Hardi carries a 50. During the summer PH hadan upgrade option from Smartpanel to Hardipanel for $99.00. Both are good but I would go with Hardi.
About the wrap. Vinyl siding is not very stiff and needs a back board to hold it on plus the wrap gives the home rigidity. Hardi/Smartpanel is a thick rigid board and serves the purpose. As to any manufacturer using plywood vs OSB, Murray must be right on that one.

Re: a little confused...one more question
lacey, are you refering to a lap siding or the full sheets of panel? i do know that all the ph i intall all use hardi plank for soffit and fascia and the ph modulars use hardi plank lap siding . this is in the southeast. the homes with tape and texture sheetrock will have osb regardless the vinyl homes can have either osb or foam underlayment , but in any case there will be some sort of membrane between the outside siding and insulation such as the tyvek type wrap , what location are you looking at a ph, all there sales location have actual cutaway displays to show the exact construction of their homes.
