Quick question. I have read somewhere here before that you should NOT attach the deck to the home as you would with typical site built homes.

Why?

Thanks!

tom , it is because of load support. the home is designed to carry x amount of weight when it is asked to support a porch it is adding addl weight. that may cause problems later. most site built have a peimeter wall supporting edge of home where on a pier system you do not. you can build the deck and have it be self supporting , you could add just a couple of screwws for stability but build it free standing, also anywhere you put a nail in is a potential way for water to get in . as a plus if you ever want to move the deck , it wont damage home moving it out of way. for deck with roof you atach it so the shingles are seamless , just design it is free standing and supports it s on weight, basically on eof the hud code requirements
