So where can I find Homes of Merit????

Post by Myra » Wed Dec 04, 2002 12:42 pm

I asked this question before but I guess it was on a slow traffic day and then it got buried, because I've never received an answer. Are there any Homes of Merit dealers to be found in Louisiana? I could find nothing out with an Internet search for some reason.

If I decided to buy a manufactured home, I want one that is constructed exactly the same way as a site-built home. ARE THERE ANY BRANDS THAT FIT THIS DESCRIPTION???? (Can you guys tell I'm a little frustrated? LOL) I've heard Cavalier is good. Would they fit this description? There is a dealer near here that has Southern Energy and someone on here said they are good, but ARE THEY BUILT JUST LIKE A SITE-BUILT HOUSE? :-) I just want the best for my money.

I know, I know, buy "The Book". But I'm not that far along, because I can't even decide if manufactured housing is worth the money. If I can get that question settled and actually decide to buy one, then I will buy "The Book". Cross my heart. :-)

What do you mean "exactly" like stick built...Many manufactured homes are much better built than basic stick built homes...
Go to www.homes-of-merit.com ...invest in a phone call about dealers nearest you..

If cost is no barrier...then buy a custom built... architect designed..engineer inspected stick built..

Unfortunately, cost *is* a barrier, so...sm

for me, it's either buy an older, already built home or a manufactured home. I don't think, unless the prices fall dramatically, I'll ever be able to afford to build my own home. My husband is a teacher. :-(

You know, I've been passing a huge, custom-built home in progress for a few months now on my way into town. It has rained, and I mean poured, on this house about five times at least while it is being built....they are only just now getting the siding on it. The stuff underneath the outside siding has been soaked several times. I just wonder if that stuff ever really dries out, and then when it's covered by siding on the outside and insulation and drywall on the inside, it seems to me that it would be a potential rot or mold problem, especially in today's tightly-built homes. That seems to me to be the main advantage of MH...although I've seen some complaints on the internet about mold in some MH also.

Now, the older home I have my eye on in town has been there for 60-70 years, well-kept, in very good shape. I don't think there would be a mold problem there. But it's either something like that or an MH for me on my means.

I have checked out the Homes of Merit site and for some reason (can't remember why) have never been able to find out where in the world their dealers are. I'll try again...thanks!

whenever I've done a search all I've come up with is web sites of dealers who carry HOM. I don't believe I've ever found that one before, for some reason.

All their dealers are in South LA. The closest one is about 3 hours away from me. I emailed them and asked about north or central Louisiana.

I noticed they have a floor plan very similar to the Fleetwood "Entertainer". That's a pretty neat plan...the only thing it is really lacking is enough laundry space.

One thing that worries me about them, though...they have been acquired by Champion Enterprises. I wonder, what with Champion going bankrupt and closing lots all over the place, if that would affect the quality of the HOM line? I had already decided that I wouldn't want to deal with Champion if I decided to buy a MH.

Thanks again for all your helpful answers. :-)

When did Champion File BR? I know Oakwood did.

Champion is much different than other manufacturers..Basically they own all the stock in HOM..They have little to do with the day to day operation..Homes of Merit will survive no matter what..They are the largest distrubutor of homes in Florida..

HOM has been owned by Champion for over 3 years and the day to day operation and all the personel have stayed the same...

Champion has closed some of their retail stores..and some of their plants in the SE...This has only helped HOM...Dealers that handled the cheaper product built in other plants are now starting to handle HOM..

Champion has not filed bankruptcy...
Good Luck

Myra,

At homes-of-merit home page, there is a dealer locations and according to the map provided, the states included are in the south east of the US.
