Which is best quality home

Post by SG » Tue May 28, 2002 9:07 pm

Which home is the best quality? I am searching for a double wide and want a quality built home. I have never purchased a manufactured home before, and need to know all I can before I purchase one.
Thanks

I would be interested as well.
We are looking at a Clayton model here in New Mexico. We've seen Fleetwood, Champions, Redmans, Patriot, and Clayton homes. The best combination of floor plan and quality we've seen is the Clayton Sedona & Chaparral
Our choice has been restricted by some manufactures/models not offering "tape&textured" walls, which we decided to go with because of it's nice appearance.
Probably the best advice is to look and look and ask and look some more. I have already discounted several of the local dealers because the salespeople we've talked to have been unknowledgable. I had one dealer agent tell me that Champion and Redman were two totally different companies and that one of their Fleetwoods was "Zone III" insulated. It wasn't - the outer walls were 2x4. NEVER get a home with 2x4 walls!
Don't go by what dealers tell you. Look for yourself, and take along someone who knows a bit about construction. The single most important factor in choosing a manufactured home is it's quality of construction (walls, insulation, flooring material, roofing, window framing, etc). It's much easier to upgrade a countertop or replace a door than it is to replace rotten flooring or roofing again and again.
I'm looking. Let me know what you find out there.

P.S. For what it's worth - Clayton was awarded "Best Manufacturer of the Year" the last three years by MHI. But what does that really mean? Who knows, but at least it's not a "bad" thing.
