R-11 Insulation

Post by Peggy O » Sun Jan 27, 2002 5:52 pm

I looked at some houses by Adrian today and they were very appealing. The brochure says that standard insulation in their houses is R-11. Is that sufficient for the North Georgia area or should I upgrade?

thanks-

The R-11 is the most that they offer in the 4 inch side wall....Much more important is upgrading to R-30 or more in the roof and R-22 or more in the floor...Even better would be a GA Power Good Sense Home...That requires all of the above plus 10 other energy related items...Your dealer should be able to advise you on other energy options such as thermo pane windows...

Adrian is a small locally owned manufacturer that has changed hands 4 times in the last 3 years...The current owner used to own Bellcrest Homes in Millen GA before it was bought by Cavalier...The plant is located in Adrian GA...a town that has not much more population than the number of employees in the factory...Not that that matters i guess..

Good Luck

Hello Peggy,

By choosing an optional energy package you will save on your monthly heating bills by 25% or more. Here is a true story that still amazes me today. A gentleman called me from Minnesota one day and was asking me questions about installation packages for his area. He was considering a Fleetwood home at the time. I asked him what the “R” factors were in the home he was looking at. He told me, R-19 in the walls, R-21 in the ceiling and R-19 in the floors. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing; Minnesota gets well below freezing during the winter months. I told the gentleman that the R-factors where not satisfactory and he needed to consider up-grading his insulation package or look at another manufacturer. It is my personal belief that every new manufactured home should have R-21 in the walls, R-21 or better in the floors and R-38 in the ceiling. For those of you that live in milder climates, I recommend up-grading your insulation package also. This will reduce your cooling costs during the summer months.

Thanks for the info. In looking at the brochures the dealer gave me, I see that Adrian's Ashton series shows R-21 in the floor, R-11 in the walls, and R-28 in the roof. It also mentions "Duke Power Rated" - what does that mean?

Their Charleston series features R-14 in the floor, R-11 in the walls, and R-21 in the roof.

Do you still think I should upgrade from that?

Another thing I liked about Adrian - and I wish more manufacturers would do this - is the doors are 36 inches wide. Also, their standard grade carpet was very nice - not like some of the el cheapo quality I've seen elsewhere

thanks for your help.

Duke Power rated means that the home meets the requirements of the Duke Power Company to qualify as an energy efficient home..Duke Power company is a power company in SC...Residents of SC that buy this home qualify for sales tax of only $ 300 on the home as a bonus for buying an energy efficient home....
As far as the other is concerned....I would upgrade to the highest offered...
By the way..Georgia Powers energy program is much more extensive and harder to qualify for...That is the Good Sense program..
