HOUSE SMART

Post by gloria » Sat Mar 10, 2001 1:39 am

Recently, my sisters and i looked a some manfactured housing with the brand name ''House Smart". We were very impressed.I thought the construction was great. They had 2x8 floor joist, 2x6 exterior sidewalls, 1/2 sheetrock interior walls. The "HOUSE SMART" has steel cable instead of strapping to secure it to the land. I have been unable to find any other info about this brand of housing.Would appreciate any help. Thanks gloria '

Gloria, HouseSmart is owned/manufactured by Oakwood; after acquiring Schult, Schult assisted Oakwood in designing this "top of the line" product (since Schult was known as a quality-manufacturer and apparently Oakwood had no clue). There have been posts (possibly to this site, though I don't recall for sure) by individuals who purchased HouseSmart (in San Antonio, in one case), where the product delivered didn't resemble the display homes, and the servicing after sales was awful. On paper, and, apparently, on display, HouseSmart sounds like a great deal! However, it was scary to hear that--at least in some cases--what was promised wasn't delivered.

Gloria,

I would avoid Oakwood homes. Look at Palm Harbor or other well made manufactured homes. Oakwood does not have a good reputation in the industry.

An understatement about Oakwood homes! Not having a good reputation.

We also loved HouseSmart until we spoke with a person who lived in one. They are currently in litigation due to shoddy workmanship, poor service, etc. Come to find out, there are 85 others in litigation in my city alone, against HouseSmart. Thank goodness we didn't decide on one. Oh they look beautiful, but I hear what you see is NOT what you get. This guys' big complaint was that when the workers set it up, they tore up so much stuff, splattered paint all over the windows, broke windows, broke tiles in the fireplace and then said they couldn't replace them. This man has lived in the home for 15 months now and it hasn't been completed yet.

Dee, Thank you for sharing the information with us. As you know manufactures like these don't need to be in business because they give the manufactured housing industry a bad reputation. Oakwood has been known to build cheap homes and can't deliver customer service. They bought one of the finest manufactures in the country which is Schults and Marlette who have been known for building one of the finest homes in the industry was bought out by Oakwood and now people who buy these homes are saying their customer service is very bad and even dealers are saying the same thing, their homes aren't serviced properly.

We are from Oklahoma and are looking at the homes offered by House Smart in Oklahoma City. The reason I am writing you is the place you were talking about here? After reading this, I think we are going to look else where for a home. They really looked nice and well built at the dealership, too bad they don't service what they sell. If you have any information about this dealership or these homes please tell us. Thank you!
