skirting
What is the best skirting for manufactured housing? I am looking at a Stone Skirt, but it is so expensive. I was wondering if the expense is worth it. I have also looked at the R-Cotec insulated siding. Is it better to have insulated or not. I'm not sure. I want to make an educated buy. Not just for looks.
Re: skirting
It's worth it. Our dealer recommended a tinted concrete block that has the textured finish. You see alot of buldings made of it (like Wal-Mart or Lowes). It was an extra $3,500, installed, but well worth it. It is dry under the house and the propane company said we use half the amount other people use. Our dealer had the house built with the frame inset to allow the block to be installed. If your house is already built and set, block can be used but it will have to be cut to fit right. I don't know how that compares with the cost of stone or brick. Any solid type skirting is better than the vinyl in terms of looks, insulation, and I would imagine, resale value.
Re: skirting
I would be interested in this information too. I'm thinking about just extending the siding down. I would like to possibly brick it in eventually, but the retailer said if that's the case then I would probably not need to get the siding extended. Can anyone give me any other ideas for skirting? I really didn't won't to go with the traditional vertical skirting.
Re: skirting
Most home improvement centers carry a fake rock or brick skirting. Not sure what it's made of, probably vinyl. It would look better than the vertical skirting. Don't forget to put the vents in and an access door. Your retailer could do all this for you...for a charge of course!
Re: skirting
Check out rcoproducts.com and see what you think about the options available on the skirting, steps, and chimney cover up. They are rated with a R-5 rating for insulation. The skirting is 1 1/8" thick. Might be a little more within my price range than the stone skirt.
Re: skirting
The most substantial skirting system around is System-1 skirting by Hoffman Concrete. System-1 is what skirting should be- 100% solid concrete. System-1 is not an imitation or a look alike – it is the original concrete skirting system that resists the elements from the summer heat of Texas to the harsh winters of Minnesota. System-1 is built to last and is designed to stay put for years of dependable service.

Re: skirting
Could you go to someplace like Home Depot and purchase like the foam board insulation and apply it on the inside of the older verticle type of skirting, leaving a few sections open to enter when necessary? For a home in Rochester, NY, I was thinking of doing that. I could use Liquid Nails perhaps to attach it..I would think even that would be better than nothing...
Also, does anyone know about the heating of these homes? I have a 28 x 66 Redman home and all of my heat goes to the back bedroom instead of my family room. There is a 7 degree temp diff between the front and back of the house unless I keep the heat up really high....warmer air is lighter and circulates better, but I cannot afford to heat that place the way I would like to, so I freeze in my family room and sweat in the bedroom. The air conditioning is the same....all cold air goes to bedroom which is nice for sleeping, but my company sweats in the family room. I have a wood pellet stove coming in next week to help heat the place but wonder if there is a solution for when summer gets here and I need the air conditioner going. Any help would be appreciated!!! I'm glad I found this site..

Re: skirting
I have a 28 by 70 MH and What I have done is taken what looks to be a fiberglass sheet about 2 in thick and installed it around the house. Now for the looks department I went after buying and installing a 26 gauge metal roof to get some more metal the same color and cut and installed it vertically. It turned out just down right gorgeous. It isnt going anywhere either. It is the most sturdy skirting next to concrete. For more info call Foretravel, Nacogdoches, Texas for the fiberglass sheets
