2x6 vs 2x8

Post by John » Sat Jan 28, 2006 9:03 am

We have finally found the house we want. Its 28' wide and comes standard with 2x6 floor joist, but can be upgraded to 2x8. Just wondering if it would be to our advantage to go with the upgrade. Thanks for any help.....

2x6 floor joists are just fine if they are on 16 inch centers....if not an option to 16 would be worth the money in the long run...

We've had both...first 2x6 then 2x8. Of course we prefer the 2x8. It's definitely stronger and found it to have less of a "rattling" type noise when our child runs through the house. (Bang on a 2x4 wall as opposed to a 2x6 and 2x8.) We can tell the difference. But we also have heavy items. I feel better knowing we have the 2x8 floors and 2x6 walls. Personal choice however. I like knowing I'm in a really strong home. The money was worth it to us.
