Schult homes?
Schult homes?
I am new to the market and was sweet talked by a Schult home salesman. They seem really nice, but I was interested to know how they hold up and if they are worth the money. Thanks
Re: Schult homes?
I think it depends on where you live, but our current home is a Marlette from a Schult factory, our last home was a Marlette from Schult factory. The last home was nice, this home is not as nice as the last. They were bought out by Oakwood, and now by Clayton. If the downward trend on our current home is any indication, I'm not happy with it. But...
I will say if you can get specs of your home and check everything out before you buy, it's a pretty good home, better than some. I guess it used to be top of the line. Here is AZ, I think it is now middle of the road.
It also depends greatly on the dealer. Some of our problems 1/2 dealer related:
They FORGOT options we paid for like outdoor heat pump and now we have this bizzare "closet" that doesn't close, window sills
All our plumbing is in the middle of our lower cabinets rendering them useless
BAD drywalling and had to go to the state (dealer)
Door moulding is hodgepodge...some decorative IN the closets and some not at all in main areas and crooked
Crushed ductwork
Bad mobile movers (dealer) to long to go into
Refused to relevel in 1 year
Cracked garden tub which was "fixed" but has now resurfaced
We stretched the home to 32 wide and nothing is centered (light fixtures etc., toilet almost on top of the tub, but BIG space next to sink cabinet)
I could go on...most is cosmetic and dealer related. I think it's too pricey for what you get. My opinion. I'd rather go with a Palm Harbor, Silvercrest, or Karsten.

Re: Schult homes?
I looked at one this past weekend and was not impressed with it, What part of the country are you in?
Re: Schult homes?
I don't know where you live, but I have a Karsten that I am very happy with.
Re: Schult homes?
We bought a Marlette out of Hermiston Oregon and have had no problems with it and many complements. We couldn't be happier.
Re: Schult homes?
We moved into our new Schult home 2 1/2 years ago. We signed the papers just days before Schult declared bankruptcy, and so thought we'd have some trouble getting any problems fixed, but happily, we had no difficulties at all.
There were no major problems, just a few cracks in the corners of the ceiling, a leaky front door, a bedroom door that was not finished correctly and a leaking toilet, all fixed within a few weeks of moving in. (The toilet fixed immediately by dealership, the rest fixed by manufacturer's serviceman when he was in the area).
It might be because we are sitting on a basement and have drywall throughout, but this house feels very solid.
I think the only disappointments are, we felt we were not informed or maybe misinformed on how long it would be between ordering the house and when construction on it actually began. And their "best" or "deluxe" cabinets (i forget what they were described as) are a disappointment.
This home was built in northern Indiana.
All in all, a good experience, we're sorry we didn't do this years ago.

Re: Schult homes?
We have two Schult homes - one is owned by a friend of mine and the other is part of our rental business. Both were purchased in 1994 and are in great condition still. Please remember: as time passes, so does the quality of workmanship and construction. Nothing is built like it used to be. If you can, go to a factory and see for yourself.

Ann:
I am in total agreement with you regarding Marlette and Schult and Oakwood and Clayton. We started buying Marlettes three years ago to use in our parks for rental purposes. The first two of ten were beautiful - no problems and no complaints. After the third, we started having problems getting parts, getting service and getting overall quality of product. We even received one home (I think it was the sixth) and it had a short somewhere in the house. I called the factory and was told the service rep would be here in three to six weeks. We ended up fixing it ourselves as it had already been rented and never called for service again. The last straw was the last unit. Ordered on July 2, the salesman told us it would arrive here a few days before Labor Day. Two days later, I was informed that our order had been moved and it was going online at the end of October. They managed to "pump out" a home for us and that is literal. It had a rodent in the belly bag, the linoleum was cut wrong so when the heat came on, it floated all over the area, there was no caulking around any of the roof vents, the toilet was cracked, parts were missing and any extra parts requested were not sent. That was the last home I will ever order. The sales staff is rude, the product is poor and way over priced! Thanks for letting me vent!!!
