Mulled Windows

Can anyone please tell me what is meant by Mulled Windows?

2 or more windows are attached together with a strip that joins them to make basically one large window.
The alternative is to have the windows about 4" apart with a structural post between them.
Many people prefer the mulled windows because they have less trim, a cleaner sight line and a more residential appearance.
