warranty info on now defunct oakwood homes

Post by debbie » Tue Aug 10, 2004 3:13 pm

i hope someone can help me!!! my boyfriend purchased in 2001 a new oakwood home, we just discovered that our whole roof has rotted, causing extensive damage to the walls inside not to mention the roof. there is a 5 year warranty on the roof, and the dealer we purchased it from refuses to help us even tho the contact they gave us to clayton homes said that anything purchased before 2002, the liablity falls back on the dealer (i guess because oakwood is out of business) certainly there has to be someone to honor the warranty on the roof even the above mentioned business is no longer around. this is supposed to be a 20 year roof, needless to say, it has only lasted 3years and 5 months. what kind of recourse do we have in order to get this warranty honored?? please help!!!!

thank you.

First...the 20 year warranty is a shingle warranty..NOT..a roof warranty...the shingles will be taken care of by the shingle manufacturer...You owners manual should have included a copy of this warranty...

Unfortunately for you..the company who built the home went bankrupt and is no more...You will have to move forward on your own,,,The dealer has no legal obilgation...only hope you would have is that he/she has a heart and will help for the goodwill from you....Do not count on it...

You need to soon get professional help and advice...it is not likely the "whole" roof is rotten...You need to stop the water from coming in ASAP...This could be a big project...good luck...

thanks!! i know it is 20 year on shingles, but we also have a 5 year warranty on roof, ext and int, electrical, etc......luckily, with a little research last night i found that a branch of oakwood is still operating in colorado, we called them they gave us a number to schult homes in kansas, they are checking into things for us today, schult is a subsidiary of oakwood, i have more numbers and info than i did yesterday, thankfully........ thank you for your help, it is greatly appreciated!!!!!

we have also covered our roof with bisqueen (sp?) and taken the trim down (inside) and we were able to dry things out, we have both of those tropical storms that are going to go right over us so hopefully we will be ok!!!!
