Just two months or so into our new home, we were hit with an ice storm that left us without power or phones for 6 days. Having been so busy with moving and settling in, we hadn't prepared ourselves well for this possibility beyond making a nice well cover (thought the tank/pump/whatever itself is under the house) and my husband wrapped any exposed pipes with this foam stuff we got at the HW store...We were out of water by the third day and were concerned the toilets may have frozen (at least the one near the end of one of the house. It was cold!!!....when the power came back up and we turned all the stuff back on, I was pleased to find NO leaks and no repairs needed anywhere (except to my spirit which was cold and weary!) I was also pleased to note that our house and no drafts from windows and doors which was great!!
My only wish was for a larger fireplace as this one seems more decorative then anything....
My PH and 6 days with no power..
Re: My PH and 6 days with no power..
Lynne,
Its great to actually hear a good story concerning a MH....Im in the process now of getting a Palm Harbor (fullest house) model. I am VERY pleased with the construction that goes into these homes......how big is your fireplace...ours is not "full size" either, but you can bet its going to look great with a couple logs burning in there
Are you planning on burning wood...or having gas hooked up to the fireplace?
Im glad to hear you made it through the freeze....what model home did you decide on?
I enjoyed your post....take care!

Re: My PH and 6 days with no power..
I'd have to go measure it to be sure, it's the standard one though, we didn't upgrade anything on it..
here's the floorplan we used except ours is a 4 bedroom which adds a room at the end and an office off the master bedroom...
http://www.palmharbor.com/our_homes/flo ... 21&area=MA
I saw it first and though I looked at others, I kept coming back to this one!
I'd like to look into an alternate source of heat when our finances will allow it, I'd LOVE to do a woodburning stove if those are allowed...
I hope you enjoy the home, go after any of the energy optnios, we did and don't regret it!

Re: My PH and 6 days with no power..
A POSITVE note: A wood burning stove is quite warm, a bit to clean; Having had to buy a pellot stove, which we have wanted for eight years, I am pleased to say that we have the great experience of a warm MH. No drafts anywhere. Turn the stove off for five to eight hours each day during the day. Cleaning is soooo simple, my shop vac (on the cold stove) is the easiest cleaning I know of. A 40# bag of pellots will last over 24 hours (actual burn time) and with a cost of $2.70 per bag. Happier we could not be with our choice of heay for our MH.Love my pellot stove:::
Re: My PH and 6 days with no power. get you a generator .
We know how that was,,, We bought a generator 5800 watts , Surge at 9,000 we live in the boonies in Indiana --Our well pump is 220 v, We have several outages here in the cold, wind blowing, freezing rain, over taxed state!!!
And it pays to have a gen on hand, They are not that expensive--Ours will run every thing in our home, We have a Schult 28x66-We got ours at Lowes for 589.00 it will run around ( Depending on the load you are pulling ) 17-14 hrs on 7 gal of fuel,,
It is not loud,, Over Head Valves 10 HP Briggs Engine,, Sounds like I am selling these, LOL!!! Nope just expressing ,,,,, In the hot weather you use a AC, So when power is gone use a Gen....
Happy Holidays
