Woodburning stove

I'm getting ready to finish the deal, but finding it hard to get "mobile home" approved wood burning stove. The home I'm getting is 32x80 patriot, so not a small one. Any thoughts? Vendors?

The stove needs to be approved for use in a manufactured home - I would guess most are. We live near Portland, OR, and there are several wood stove dealers - we had quite a choice. Many stoves do not need a catalytic converter either (you heard that right!), some do... don't know what replacement cost might be, or if needed (ours is converterless). Have fun shopping!

I was once told that it is not legal to install a wood burning stove in a mobile home. We have a 1975 model, that comes with an outrageous heating bill each month. We live in a park. I also asked the manager about insulation and he said he didn't know how it could be installed. We live outside of Sacramento, where would I go to find out the actual codes, restrictions, etc, or does someone already know the information I need? The park manager receives the electric/gas bill and reads each meter to determine each homes portion of the bill. Our last bill was $300 for both gas and electric. Our furnace is accessable from an outside entrance, we replaced the water furnace which is right next to it and had a company look at the furnace and they said it was old, but worked properly. Our 1450 sq foot mobile home takes way too much money to heat each month, compared to our highest bill of $80 at our previous apartment. We really feel we are getting taken!

This is governed by the building code - the county's, if you live in an unincorporated area, or the city's, if a big enough city. When ours was installed, the county building folk came to inspect it. I doubt the county would make a distinction between HUD and pre-HUD homes; it's mostly a matter of having good airflow from outside the building envelope, and a proper thimble (spacer between flue and insulation/roof). Call the county building department... they should have the answer (you might find this online at their website also).
Part of the cost issue with pre-HUD and older homes is that they're usually 2x4 construction, with less insulation than more modern homes. Our house is 2000 sf, with electric heat, well pump, electric hot water. The electric bill runs $130-230, depending on how much we use our stove.
