I have heard that skyline homes have building materials that emit formaldehyde. I want to know how serious of a health risk this is. Also, do the formaldehyde emissions diminish over time.

Hi Ken. I just bought a Skyline home and one of the things I noticed about Skyline is there is no chemical smell. I bought my home from a dealer that sells Fleetwood and Skyline. When I went shopping mid-summer and toured the 30 plus homes on the lot, It became very easy to pick out the Fleetwood homes because I literally could not make it past about 2 rooms with the chemical smell
(formaldihide). The Skylines had no smell at all. I mentioned this fact to the employees and they readily agreed that Fleetwood uses much cheaper materials and therefore emitted a chemical strong smell. It would literally burn my eyes and irritate my sinuses. Skyline uses much better materials, therefore no smell. Every modern home made uses materials that contain formaldihide ie..carpets,adhesives,cabinets,curtains,etc...It is the quality of these materials that dictate whether or not it will emit into the home and irritate us. The quality of the product has nothing to do with the content of the formaldehyde.
Formaldehyde is used in a vast number of products, especially permanent press
clothing and carpeting. The best way to get rid of the odor in clothes and carpet

Actually the quality of the homes construction materials does effect the off gassing of formaldehyde..

The worse building supply for this is pressboard...which is standard in most cheaper homes..including the Fleetwood mentioned here...Some of the very best homes do not even use press-board in the cabinets and counters for this reason..

Homes with plywood or OSB floors will have MUCH less formaldehyde off gassing...Formaldehyde IS the basis of the glue used in press-board..

I agree that this stuff is in a lot of products...but those that are sensitive to it should make an effort to buy a home with less in it..

For those that are really very sensitive (a very small portion of the public..and they would already know because of previous exposure) should probably only consider a used home a few years old..after most of the formaldehyde has dissipated..
