HUD certification

Post by Need Educating » Sat Sep 06, 2003 4:53 pm

Thinking about buying an older (1965) MH. Am concerned about futer resale. Someone told me it was possible to have an older MH inspected/certified to a more present HUD standard. Is this true? If so, who would perform the inspection and where would one get a copy of the requirements?
Any advice would be helpful and appreciated. Thank you!

That is not possible.Pre-1976 means pre HUD.

The answer you gave about bringing pre-hud home to a certifired hud requirement is incorrect. One must upgrade electric wiring, windows etc to hud standard then have the home inspected and certified. However, this exspense in many cases outways the value of the home.

You can upgrade all you want. You still cannot get a pre 76 home certified as HUD.If you have info to the contrary please post the source.

Bill is exactly correct...All home built before July 15, 1976 are mobile homes by federal definition..and will always be..

How do I find out the month of the year that a home is? Financing is almost impossible to get if the home is not July of 1976 and I don't want to shell out money to start escrow if they are just going to deny the loan later. The seller does not have the paperwork in hand and the loan co. told me the only way to find out is to start escrow.

What the lender is actually telling you, is that the home must be a HUD code home. July is the cutoff. The distinction is clear, look for the HUD label on the rear corner of the home. If the home is labeled, it was built after the July cutoff. If it is not labeled, it was built prior to the HUD code. The HUD label is a 2" x 4" red and aluminum tag, riveted to the home.

That same information, which is only the label number, is also on the data plate inside the home.
