I was told by a relator in my area that putting a manufactured home on vacant land within the city limits is not acceptable unless the home has been built to HUD standards. In doing research it seems that most manufactures are built to HUD standards. The relator made it sound like it was hard to find one that was. Whats the deal. Are they all approved by HUD or only certian kinds. Thanks for your help.

Somebody is misunderstanding something....ALL manufactured homes meet the HUD code...

It is not uncommon that local governments will not allow HUD homes BUT will allow modulars...which are built to a state enforced building code....Often these are also available easily..many HUD manufacturers build them as well...and there are companies that build nothing but modular homes...

Sounds like you need a better understanding...The best place to get local zoning information is from your local zoning official...Call them and ask...Unfortunately many real estate folks have little understanding of our business..

Chief, the code section is quite lengthy, but can be accessed at huduser.org. It is code section 24 CFR 3280.208 (Fire detection equipment) It does differ a little from the IBC on the locations for the bedroom areas. If you have trouble accessing this information, let me know, and I will fax you code copies of the pertinent sections.
