Hurricanes and Tornados

Post by Peggy » Sun Jul 13, 2003 8:23 am

I live in Charlston, SC and am getting cold feet in regards to purchasing a mobile home. I plan to look for a piece of land at a decent distance from coast. What happens if a tornado comes up? We have sufficient warning with hurricanes. Whenever severe weather comes up my favorite metoroligist warns mobile home owners to leave. I'm not sure if I want to be heading for a motel whenever the weather changes? What are your thoughts? Thanks.

If a tornado hits your brick house square on..your hotel..your block house..your manufactured home..your school...your shopping center..you should take cover..

The point is...do you run to the motel now...no..but if you are sure a tornado was bearing down directly on the structure you are now in..you would take cover...I hope..

A properly set modern manufactured home (notice not mobile home that the weather service talks about)...is no more vunerable than any residential stick built home..

Same goes for hurricanes....Nothing is hurrcane proof..but those who want to live by the beach take the risk...

Having lived in Chas during Hugo I can tell you that its the luck of the draw when a hurricane comes calling.Tornados are mixed in with hurricanes and if one comes your way it won't matter what you live in(including Channel 5's brick studio there so proud of)I saw block and brick structures leveled after Hugo and 35 year old "trailors' untouched.Chas and N Chas have a 'lot' of older mobile homes that are are not in great shape.I believe that weather men such as Bill Walsh don't have any idea about modern manufactured homes other then they are all "trailors" in his eyes. Also remember that TV weathermen tend to scare the hell out of people every time a thunderstorm goes by(translated ratings!). Modern MF housing is a far cry from the construction of the 60,70, and 80's.
On another note there is no safe distance from the coast if you live in the Chas area when it comes to winds from hurricanes :)

And how did you know I was referring to Little Billy Walsh? Thanks for the reply.

When it came to Hugo, Columbia was still too close.
