We have a 2002 custom built Shamrock home (out of Plymouth, Indiana). It is a very good home--we've had only minor issues which have been taken care of quickly by both manufacturer and dealer. Moved in last December. But, twice in the last 3 weeks, we have awoken in the morning to find that the pilot light is out on the water heater. Very frustrating as there is no hot water for showers. I called our dealer and he was puzzled, didn't really think it was much of a problem. I asked if I should call the manufacturer and he said no, it isn't their problem, it is really an appliance issue and may be covered by the manufacturer of the water heater but again, dealer didn't really think it was a problem.
The strange thing is, we had a stick built home, bought brand new in 1997. Had the exact same problem, with much frequency. The builder kept sending people out to look at it. They changed out different parts, rerouted the air flow, put a cap on the roof, even installed a new unit. Eventually, the situation worked out. We still would occasionally find the pilot light out but not as often.
My questions--is this normal? Anybody else had this happen? Who should I contact about correcting the problems? Shouldn't this fall under the one-year warranty from factory? Thanks for any help.

new home old problem
Re: new home old problem
I have gas (propane) and don't have that problem. If the regulator is adjusted correctly it should stay on unless there is moisture in your gas line or a draft that blows it out.
Re: new home old problem
I had this happen on a site-built home with natural gas. Any good east wind would do it... the wind would blow down the flue. I fixed it by bolting on a shield. The regulator on my water heater lacked an adjustment. I would guess if you have an adjustable regulator, you can turn it up a bit. If not, I'd try working with the water heater maker. I would guess they have experience with this and can advise you about the regulator.
