what was well built pre-HUD

If I'm looking at units pre-HUD, how do I know what was built by a quality manufacturer? What do I ask to find out if it was then well maintained?

I did own a Ranada model, built by Skyline. Pre HUD, it was a perfect mobile home. My Skyline that I have today is a 2000 model year and is the worst thing I have ever lived in in my entire life and Skyline continues to fight rather than fix.
