Electrostatic Air Cleaners

One option I am seriously considering is an electrostatic air cleaner. The type that connects directly to your a/c unit/heat pump. We are smokers and I am highly allergic to pollen. They are not cheap from what I have found... in the area of $1,500 +. Anyone have any experience with these type units ?
